Lavender is a native of the west Mediterranean; an evergreen shrub cultivated on a large scale for its oil. This is extracted from the flower spikes and was used for its masking perfume and skin freshening properties. It is reputed to have the power to neutralise a viper's venom! Is an excellent antiseptic and insecticide and makes a lovely addition to cakes, biscuits and cocktails.
